Alright, gonna give a bullet list of what happened.

1. Rebooted Server
- HDD error
2. Rebooted again, worked ok.
3. Put hdd in other computer
- HDD error
4. Rebooted that computer, not recognized by BIOS, but worked in windows for about 10 minutes, then write errors occured, drive disappeared from my computer.
5. Rebooted, clunking noise from hdd, not recognized anywhere.
6. Rebooted, same
7. Rebooted, no clunking noise, still not recognized.
8. Rebooted, no clunking noise, not recogized by BIOS, worked in windows for 10 minutes or so, then write errors occured, drive dissappears.
9. Repeat process enough times to get some data backed up.
10. Put hdd back in server, works like a charm.

My dilemma:

The original error was in the server . . .
Does this mean :

A: a fluke, and not going to happen again
B: My other computer is conflicting with that drive (it is a scsi based system, oodles of stuff on it, maybe too much)
C: Drive is toast
D: Drive isnt toast, but send it back anyway.

ANY and ALL suggestions, ideas are welcome!

I would send the drive back. Ofcourse this means dealing with tech support.

Nah, its an automated process direct from the manufacturer. Shouldnt be a problem. As long as its under warranty.

Now, i think it may be something to do with the BIOS on the second computer. You would think any computer capable of ATA100 would be able to handle an 80 GB drive though . . .

At the very least, i have it all backed up on three separate 30GB drives . . .

I have to agree, sounds like more than just a little hiccup.

Yeah, i think i will send it back. Still cant figure out though why it works no problem back in the server computer. Been running it for 12 hours now, and still humming along.

Thanks for the advice, should have everything back to normal, minus the 80GB drive, in a day or so. Stupid work, keeps eating up all my time.

SCSI drives do make a lot of noise!

Do you use a Compaq Server or Compaq SCSI RAID set up?

You might need to update your firmware on the SCSI Card / RAID system.

Did you set your jumpers properly?

Let me know what setup you have!

For Playing AA:O :

ECS K7S5A
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
512MB DDR333 - Running at 266 CL2
ASUS V9280 GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB
30GB Seagate 7200RPM ATA100
Generic CDROM
300W Power supply
Full Tower case

I run the 2 systems off a switch box on one monitor, a 17" Sceptre Dragon Eye.

On a side note, i benchmarked my systems, and the duron 1.3 performed better than the Dual PIII's in 3DMark 2001SE (7100 as opposed to 6200 on the dual PIII's. I get just over 9200 with the Athlon XP 1800+.). That is why im switching over. I'm not happy with the motherboard, but i'll take what i can get.

All I can say would be a scsi and controller conflict... got any further details on your error codes?

NO, no error codes per se, just, write error ot such and such location, and on the other comptuer, Secondary Master HDD Failure. I have another HDD running in same spot as the 80GB was, no troubles. Its definately the drive, as i got another failure message on the other computer. Just hope the BIOS will support the new 80 when i get it back. Gonna try it with 3 IDE drives, just for fun, for now.

If you are having so many problems with it brand new, it will do nothing but give you bigger problems in the future, just send it back and try another new one.

Question... might be a stupid one, but here it is....

Why are we running an ATA100 drive on a SCSI machine?
