View Full Version : Just say NO.....to Windows Vista

At least for a while.
Seems Nvidia is being a tad slow in getting good drivers to the Vista table.
Of all the games I have reinstalled since the install only Rainbow 6; Las Vegas is working
No AAO or Tiger Woods or any other game for me until Nvidia gets off their A$$e$ and get the drivers done.
Other than a few other minor issues (non graphic related) this has actually been the easiest most pain free Windows install I have ever done.
Unfortunately because Vista requires a good GPU it is unfortunate that Nvidia has delayed in getting good drivers made.
They wasted no time in their packaging though. Lot's of slick adds showing Vista compatibility. (they ought to be required to put the term eventually on the ads)

Does it support SLI yet?
As far as I can tell Vista offers almost nothing. It costs more, performs worse, has worse compatibility, etc, etc. It does look nicer, and theres DirectX 10, but that seems to be about it.
According to HP's website the higher resolution icons can result in vastly increased search performance, but I don't use search anyway..... I should try to buy up copies of XP as people make the switch, I'll need them if I ever decide to go back to windows.

Do not buy it now!! Wait some time. A good friend, witch is selling Vista, and tried it, is not very satisfied with, for the reason resq just mentioned.

I'd actually be very pleased with it, if they'd just fix the graphics drivers.
There are some issues with old software not related to graphics but they are usually quickly resolved.
I love the Aero interface and the machine does seem more......responsive.
and I'm not sure what is up but my p2p downloading/upling seems to have seen speed increases. I'm getting dl speeds on public torrents that I'm used to only seeing on private ones

I've learned the hard way not to jump to the latest and "greatest" version of Windows for at least a year. It's always the same kind of thing, some people go smoothly and some have nothing but nightmares. So once all you guys get done pulling your hair out (for those that still had some to pull) and they fix Vista, then I'll take a look at it :)

How much difference will I see if I switch to XP 64 rather than staying in the 32 bit world, now that my new system is 64 bit?
Vista isn't even an option for me, I played with the Beta and it scared me lol

Right now 64 bit software and drivers are scarce. Best to stick with 32 bit for a while

My understanding is that the performance increase you get from running a 64bit OS is extremely minimal.
However Vista is a bit unique in this sense. With its new memory management, specifically in regular desktop computing (web browsing, documents, music, videos, money management stuff, whatever, just not games) Vista is a serious memory hog but can take good advantage of lots of memory. Benchmarks are showing that if you have 2GB of RAM and you stick in another GB you will actually see a significant performance increase, and again when you move from 3GB to 4GB. The thing is that a 32bit OS can only possibly support 3GB of RAM, whereas a 64bit OS can go up to 16GB I think.
The point being that you can get a sort of twisted performance increase from running 64bit Vista instead of 32, but only if you are willing to purchase more than 3GB of RAM. Of course the drivers are even scarcer than they are in 32bit vista, and you will generally have more compatibility issues.
But if you are running XP I would suggest sticking with 32bit, I haven't heard anything good about 64 Pro.

Cool!
Thanks... I thought though that 32bit could support 4Gb of RAM??? I dunno, I am just a nerd.
After talking with Tom, I think I will move on up to Vista when the new drivers are released from Nvidia (provided that they work). Thanks Tom for all of the wonderful information on the issue.

Oops, my mistake you're right. It seems like the deal is "win32" (whatever that is, something integral to windows) will only allow a program to use 2GB of RAM, but supports up to 4? Something like that. I really don't get it, but at least it makes more sense now, I thought 3GB seemed really random.

I am Running Vista and my ASUS GF7950GX2 runs on the Nvidia 9746 vista driver.
And i must say it runs like a charm.
Like the whole thing i think i stick with it.

The new drivers have resolved MOST of the problems, except for those of us using SLI.
Most games are fixed but some are still causing problems.
My scanner still doen't work and Visioneer says it will not release drivers until at least July. So I gave it away and bought an Epson. They have drivers now
