Well I've seen some odd screennames in my time online, and some have got me wondering what the heck they mean or how they came up with it. Now mine's easy. My first pet was a dark grayish rat whom I had named Smokie. And so I dubbed myself Smokierat or SmokieRat. It was nice too cause no one else on any game or server had my name. Now it's your turn, where's that name of yours come from? :D

I've been using my username since I first got my own internet access. It is the first usename I ever used. It's a combination of my initials (Tat) and my wifes (Mtt) initials and our ages at the time. If I were to update it, it now would be Tatmtt2524, but I don't think I'm going to do that.

When I first got onto the internet, I had the screen name "knight_rider16". Yeah, I'm a Knight Rider fan. Anyone know if reruns are still on here or there? Anyway, a year passed, and I became "knight_rider17". So, I changed all my IM screen names, and my web-based e-mail addresses accordingly.
Later on, I realized that it was going to be quite a hassle to keep my screen name updated with my age. (Since I couldn't just have "Knight Rider", as it was usually already taken by someone else using whatever service I was signing up for.) So, I started to ponder what I should have as my new screen name. At the time, I believe, Star Wars: Episode I was recently out. I was already a bit of a Star Wars fan, and I loved the way Obi Wan Kenobi was portrayed in Episode I. Then, I recalled a nickname I'd had for a short time when I was much younger. ("Coby" - Don't ask how or why, I don't even remember.) So, I just swapped out the homonym and found the screen name which has lasted me nearly four years now, and likely will be my online identity until the end of my days.

August 24th, 2003, 04:55
My first name, Sputmann, was a play on words. My pet name for my wife is "Sputnik" and she has used that name ever since coming to the world of the internet in '95. "Mann" means "husband" in German. So I was called the "Sputmann" the husband of Sputnik. I changed it a couple of months age to "Silberpfeil" because I have gotten alot of gray hair lately and my wife has taken to calling me Silberpfeil, which means Silver Arrow in German.

My first online name ever was GunRunner (used for the danish Jubii Chat), but that name was allready taken when I joined AA, so I had to come up with something else. My wife, who was the one who introduced the chat to me, is using the name DeZe in her chat profile, and since I knew for sure that she wouldnt be playing AA, I took her name.
The name itself comes from the first two letters in two of our kids names: Dean and Zelia :D
Dark.Visage
August 24th, 2003, 05:58
When I first got online I was known as RiverHawke (a play on names from a couple fantasy books, Riverwind from Dragonlance and Hawke from an amateur Dragonlance story I read). Well, one day on a fantasy game I was very much into, my online wife was insulted so I had a fight with them man. This game was very strict on rules and rule one was if you lost the fight with someone, they got to decide if you lived or died. This guy hated me in real life hehe so he chose death. Thus I had to delete the RiverHawke account on the server and with that River died and I never used him again.
After that I never got too attached to a name again, just switching from name to name every year or so. Been through Spectral Knight, Dark Poet, Kardiak Aresst, and Master Saero to name some. Now that I've found a name I can stick with it's really cool.
Dark.Visage came about simply because I couldn't think of anything better to come up with at the time. It really has no meaning at all that I can think of.

In 97 I got off the AOL short bus. That's the number issue covered easily enough.
When signing up for earthlink I had several good names and variations of my initials, name, interests, and all of tehm were spoken for in some form. My response to the customer service rep was bite me. I then changed to the computeresque byte added the year and the rest is cosmic forces aligning and being woven into a quilt of obscurity surounded by a mysterious shroud of glimmering fandago paste....

August 24th, 2003, 16:48
Bubba - I think my picture says it all. Got the nickname in high school and it has followed me around ever sense.
316 - As you can figure, bubba is a very common username (why I don't know because most people named bubba are either in jail or don't have electricity). I use to be a huge WWF & Stone Cold Steve Austin fans. He had a prodict line with Austin 3:16 on it. This was a play on the signs that were always at baseball games. His 3:16 meant that "I just whooped your :booty_sh: ". So I just started adding the 316 at the end for the same reason.

I got the nick name Ace while in the Navy. In the AO shop (Avaition Ordnance) we all had nicknames. The PO1 (Petty Officer 1st Class) would hand out the nickname. I received the nick Ace.
We would always play cards while watching TV. Well it never failed that when it was my turn to deal I would not be paying attention and someone would yell "Damn it Ace Deal".
I have been using that name Acedeal for most all my toons that I play online.

Gungjuilio
August 26th, 2003, 06:42
I started with the nickname Bam Bam...Because I have a Bam Bam tatoo on my right shoulder ( the one from the Flintstones).
Later on in life I was a bouncer and was then called Guito ( The Italian thug type) and that didn't last.
10 years ago I founded Team Zetec ( Mountain Bike Team) who annually raises around 8 to 10 thousand dollars for the MS Society. Since I was the founder my team-mates decided to dub me the Team Captain also. We then became a registered National Team and competed in the state of Washington. I held almost all of the downhill records state wide because I was Gung-Ho. (according to my team-mates) I was the Lead Guitarist for a band called Mockery so they also called me Juilio Englacias. ( The music I partook in was no where near the same).
If you ever played on Gamestorm ( an internet gaming zone that was up and running till about 3 or 4 years ago) you would have seen me in Multiplayer Battle Tech as *Col.* Gungjuilio_SPAWN_*MERIC*. I was the leader of the SPAWN Battalion in the house of MERIC. Or maybe Lt. Gungjuilio*KOH* ( Kinghts of Honor) in the game Legends of Kesmai, or possibly Gungjuilio*LordsOfFear* in the game Magecraft.
Later on I was awarded a Service Award from Zetec Incorporated where I was employed and The Team dubbed me Gungjuilio.
I still to this day hold the Washington State Record for a downhill run called Suntop.
It is a Single Track Trail that Runs down a mountainside from 8500 ft to 300 or so.
In every thing I do I will always be Gungjuilio.

my first ever online screen name was thee_unknown on yahoo. then I added stoner_with_a_boner & nightdragon_thatz_a_pimp...I was given the nick pimp dawg because my friend justin's younger sister's both played me for a fool  so I messed with it and found nightdragon. Then I became an ICP/TWIZTID fan after many years in the light of mainstream music(pop music = :11334-6: ) . Stoner came around cuz I was indulging in illegal pleasures while I was a teen :afro: , hehehe. Then I discovered everquest, and became totally addicted. I had Umber my barbarian shamen from bertox server then transferred to teris-thule....I was in a guild Knights of Cymbrogi, lost contact after my dad revoked all game privileges from his pos pc(proteva pentiumIII 400mhz). When I got another computer I got into flight sims and combat sims and strategy games (crimson skies, mechwarriors, C&C, Age of Empires and Total annihilation). I played on The Zone and Mplayer as Bullpup_223....I hate the .223 caliber and think the steyr aug is a ugly piece of crap. I choose mine after I took command of my first challenger 2 tank, she was named Furious. The name dates back to WWI, when it graced the side of an old Mark IV that took part in the battle of Ypres and the first tank battle at Cambrai. All of the 6th Battalion had names starting with F, this has been continued with the naming of all Falcon squadron tanks with the original F names. The 32 comes from her callsign number now.

September 8th, 2003, 17:59
Mine is simple... in days of old a Rogue was a thief/scoundrel and in somewhat modern times a Rogue is someone who doesn't follow the pack/ goes his own way. Well when I got online I was working as a cop and started with Stuffem and my partner in crime at the time chose Cuffem (a play on the cop term of Cuffem and Stuffem). After being online a while and not many cops where into computers or the internet I switched to Rogue. In all the online game I have played it has been Rogue,TxRogue, TxRogueSniper, even RogueGunz or Rogue w/clan tag.
-=DoW=- Allessir
September 9th, 2003, 05:06
Most of my online names come from Dungeons and Dragons. And yes it's the D&D that's had alot of hype over the years. I've played this RPG since 77 or so. Over the years I've always had trouble finding names for the various things I would join and needed a user name. Allessir is a what's called a Bladesinger. Within D&D you could be a fighter/mage. But the only problem is that at any point you were either acting as a fighter or casting a spell as a Mage. But a Bladesinger was both at the same time. Only Elves could be Bladesingers. The blending of Melee combat with the power of the mage is something to truly behold. So now I take my online games from characters I've had in D&D. With over 400 names to choose from, I've got plenty to play around with. And this is the Name I've used most often since. Either Allessir or the name of one of my Dwarven fighters.

October 5th, 2003, 11:47
In the early 70s skydivers built formations around the first jumper out, usually picked for his weight, called the Base and the second skydiver usually heavy also but more skilled would hook up with him. We call it Pin because speed was important. Base-Pin. I've used it since the early days of hotmail. Back then a 180 lbs. would have been heavy.

When I came to college volleyball team, guys started to call me Plaminek, because Plaminek means in Czech "little flame". We in Czech Republic call red-haired people (sometimes) Plamen (which means "flame"in English) and because I am red-haired and only 185 cm tall (many guys in team are taller, but height sometimes doesn't matter  ), they started to call me Plaminek and I am using it on the net too.

I was sitting there one night wondering why a game could have me Shaken and the name was born. I just wish it was OPFOR shaken and not me! :stick:
Coldsteel
October 15th, 2003, 17:55
I use to be ADDICTED to Diablo II LOD... I played more than I play on DoW servers (if that is possible). I was going to make my first character a sword Paladin. For my account I thought of the name Coldsteel but it was taken. I then used the first number that came to my mind when I thought of "cold" 32 (degrees fahrenheit). This name stuck with me for every game and screen name that I ever used.... except AA:O. I wrote my email address wrong so I couldnt verify it and I couldn't redo it. I used Im4n3l33th4x0r (started on DoW servers with this name in September 2002) because I was into Diablo and everyone talked in h4x0r. That got old. I then made an acronym from my dad's naval rank in Nam: LTJGRMCJR Leiutenant Junior Grade R.M.C. Jr. Once me and a friend made a clan I was able to reregister my name with the tag as [HMS]Coldsteel32 then because everyone thought we were British it became {(WFA)}Coldsteel32. Then unfortunately the clan broken apart and I joined -=DoW=- cadets! That is the story of my name.

5thColumn
October 21st, 2003, 15:50
The 5th Column, you only need 4 to hold up a ceiling, so why is there a 5th Column? That is the origin of a 5th Column something that looks normal but if you look closely you wonder why is it really there. Over time there have been many explanations of the duties and responsibilities of the 5th Column. The most popular is the column of soldiers or spys posing as refugees, etc., that precedes the arrival of the main forces. Its main function is to bribe local officials to leave a gate unlocked and scare the masses with tales of the ferociety of the advanceing army, recon the opposing forces and report back with their strengths and weaknesses. A more insidious incarnation of the 5th Column is an organization that works from within to destroy the organazation. I know it sounds the same but there are subtle differences. The second example is purely motivated by a need to grab power or wealth, while the first is to win battles with little to no casulaties.
As for me I love history. I also love observing how the meaning of words change over time. Currently the press is twisting the meaning of 5th Column. They are adding it to the list of ways to describe terrorists. Believe half of what you read then fact check it all twice ;)

Needs lots of BBQ. But if you tenderize them right. Then you only need a light Marinade with just a touch of Kosher salt and a hint of garlic. Tho I'll have to admit. I have a suspicion that the DoW panda is a little stringy.

 probably has that gamey taste to him too.
-=DoW=- Allessir
October 24th, 2003, 09:58
Gamey taste is a lack of preparation. Most often cuased by leaving the meat out at room temp. This cuases the bacteria to grow at an exponential rate. "Gamey" meat is usually spoiled and cooking to well done still will not kill off or stop the growth of bacteria.
Sorry. Can you tell I know a little bit bout food? lol

What an AWESOME thread... I'll revive it after several months:
When in military school we had a small group that wrote and distributed text/ansi files for 2600 Magazine and ran it all off a BBS called Ionic Destruction based in Philadelphia. My specialty was blue/red boxing as well as some pretty nasty virii back when V.C.L. was the hottest thing out there. (Only for tactical strikes, of course)
My handle was general failure for quite a while, but once that got old, my mentor was watching me working on something or other, and the application crashed, causing a fatal error.... the PH implies a background in "phreaking" or "thank you for abusing AT&T"
That was lots of fun before it all became a federal offense... No I'm an old dog whose tricks were outdated as soon as ESS replased xbar.

January 7th, 2004, 16:05
lol I was surprised to see a thread this big pop outa no where :P
I needed a name for a D&D chracter (and I play Magic too, lol yes I've heard it all). And I have this thing about originality, and wanted no link whatsoever to anything. The character was originally gonna be a dwarf and so I noticed all the example names in the Player's Handbooks used alot of Harsh letters, like R or X. So it came to be Ryox. Then after I never became a dwarf I pulled Sinfar outa the air to balance it. Ryox = Sniper/Mage his son is Kiran = Spy/Theif and Kiran's Half brother is Toran = cleric/healer. (thou I only use other names when I have classes, like Everquest and stuff)
I just sorta liked it... kept it. Still enjoying it ;P

Innox
January 23rd, 2004, 04:16
Update on my name, I recently found out that it is a variation on a french word (Inox, note only one n) that means stainless steel. I'm a bit ashamed I didn't know this since I spent 15 years learning french but oh well.
FatMan!
January 23rd, 2004, 09:18
Well throughout my gaming years (and since I'm 16 some of you have had your names since before I was born... lol) I've had many many sn's. I wont post them all or you'd be reading this thread all day, but none of them have really stuck.
The first multiplayer game that I played was Quake III Arena and I used the name FatElvis because there was a skin you could pick that was a guy that was really fat, and kinda looked like Elvis. I only played on one server, It was called Mitz, and when it shut down I went looking for a new game, and found AAO version 1.0
When I started playing AA I realised that FatElvis wouldnt work since there werent any skins to choose from. I for some odd reason chose [Super]Geek. which became boring, so I changed it to [Super]Sniper since all I did was play on sniper only maps. Well since that was REALLY generic and boring, I changed it to [Mr]McOwnage which transfered over from my CS days where I would like to think I owned. At that time I was in F^S, and I decided to drop all things that had related to F^S since I didnt have that great a time there and my new name became FatMan! because I thought it was funny. NO, I'm not fat, just look at the album and you can see for yourself = ]

Well I think Gung gets the big HOOAH there.. drive on soldier....My screen name has evolved a little I have one that I've had for several years. Jester(with a sexual referance that i will leave out) which is the first SN i ever had and still use to this day. but because i do play a few mil. sims i wanted to get a screen name that would be more age appropriate. So i fell back on my Army exp. where i started out as a M-60 gunner. right before i ETS'd i got issued a new then M249 SAW(Squad Automatic Weapon) while being considerably lighter I really did miss the punch of a 7.62 round :) The 69 would be the year i was born.

-=DoW=- Bush8
May 17th, 2004, 17:17
Ok there hasn't been a post here recently so I will explain my call sign. Since I am in the military I have a call sign of course I belonged to Bravo company which was known as Bushmasters and that was my original name but people kept asking me if I played paintball because of the Bushmaster paintball gun. It go treally annoying so I shortened it to Bush and the 8 was the age of my daughter when I started playing AA so the name Bush8 was born.

mine is pretty simple i LOVE sniper only servers and and as u all will guess iam a girl
-=DoW=- MrTank187
July 8th, 2004, 18:52
All right mine is simple, Michael Rich is my real name. I took the M and R and then my nickname Tank and then just add 187 for the heck of it. Which got me mrtank187, when i join -=DoW=- on TS everyone kept calling me Mr Tank. So when i offically became a member of -=DoW=- i just kept the Mr. and now it looks like this -=DoW=- MrTank187. I got the nickname Tank from one of my bosses, which happens to be Gandiman's boss as well. He gave me the nickname because i'm a 6'5", 340lb. guy that doesn't get moved very easily and can take just about anything.

CrazySnyper
February 8th, 2006, 23:27
I was -(F^S)-InsaneSnyper, and got bored one day when there was no one on fs sniper server. I had heard DoW was the best sniper clan around so when I saw a DoW sniper server up I joined up. Turned out I needed an account without the fs tags so I created CrazySniper19. About an hour later I decided I to quit fs as soon as enough dow guys knew me for me to get in. I quit a few days later, but since I was already known here as Crazy I went ahead and changed my main to CrazySnyper. Then got tags :D.

friendly-fire

but i guess my user name would be because i am new and if i play AA there will be alot of friendly fire lol
Dutchie
February 24th, 2006, 02:20
Dutchie, as in from the Netherlands, not the Pennsylvania Dutch that is!!
In the "old" days ( when Ace was still playing AA ) that kinda was my "joke" when people asked me where I was from.
Anyone remember the old days? Using the MOS on bridge etc?
Anyhow, I was living in Dublin, as in Dublin, Ireland (and not Dublin, Ohio) and my friends called me dutchie.
So from then on my AAO name was Dutchie_in_Dublin , then -=DoW=-_Dutchie and now I am back at Dutchie_in_Dublin.
-=DoW=- Hean

shadghost
February 28th, 2006, 01:03
Whelp oringaly i had Shaddddow back in elem school but to my souprise it was too long for a clan name in the zone, so i expriamted with a few names such as shad, but this is uesed too much, and shadboome, but i was called a ghost once and it stuck as shadghost, a combanation of my sneky attck movies in aoe2.... that i lost... and my pets name shadow... so that my story and i am sticking to it
hagrus
February 28th, 2006, 10:02
My family is Scottish and I have some red in my beard (which my friends found funny), so my friends started calling me hagrus. The name was available on almost all servers. Where is wasn't available you will see hagrun... you might see hagrug or hagru... you get the idea. The nick name stemed from my last name which went through several hundred evolutions before landing where it is today. The oddest were Beef, and Angus.
Tiefling
March 1st, 2006, 12:03
My name is pretty simple. I write fantasy stories and one of the races from D&D is a Tiefling. They are a half-breed of a human and a demon (or other creature from the abyss for all you D&D ppl who love semantics). I had just edited a story I wrote about a tiefling before I made my account and it just stuck.
(some new tag here) Jedi
March 1st, 2006, 12:09
I cant answer why i just made up my name [jedi]erickillsyou. i shortened it to join the clan cuz it was to long. Jedi was what i came up with as a spoof at first no it kinda stuck. no not a star wars nut either. lol
