Anyone out here into researching/documenting Genealogy on their computer?
I just recently DLed a couple programs and started building my family tree from what I know, in a GEDCOM file. Then, I found a website (made by people I've until now not heard of) that has a tree going about 16 generations deep from me, on some generations. (Turns out sometime down the line I've got relatives in the L'Heureux family.) So, of course I'm like "Man, this is deep stuff here... I gotta have this on my database." and I started (manually) copying in data. I managed to get all my ascendants in, and started working on their descendants (my - distant - cousins) when it finally hit me exactly how huge this database is that they have. So, I e-mailed the webmaster, requesting access to the GEDCOM file that contains their database. Although I have yet to hear back from him, I came to notice that my genealogy program (GedLink, http://www.gedlink.com/) doesn't have a "merge" feature.

Soooo....

Does anyone know of a freeware program that can merge GEDCOM (v. 5.5) files?

Oh, and if some of your ancestry is in France, you might want to check out this "Index of Persons" on the L'Heureux Family Genealogy website and see if you might be related. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lheureux/lh1/persons.html

I wouldn't at all be surprised if a few people from these forums turned out to be distant cousins to me. Particularly any Canadians of French descent. The L'Heureux tree covers a LOT of territory.

I have not yet been able to find a program that can trace the roots of bottom feeders, so no, I have not yet done my family tree.

Ok back on track.

My uncle got suckered into doing our "family tree" when one of my aunts (by marriage) asked "who are all these people ya'll are always talking about". Well spent the last 10 years researching everything he could get his hands on. He even found copies of the ships manifest from when our family came to America. He finally called it quits and donated all the info to a local library

Coby one thing you might look at is the Mormon libraries. They have a belief that if you are related to a Mormon in even the sliest way you will go to heaven, so they keep extensive genealogy records.

Hrm... pretty sure I don't have any Mormon in my blood. Mostly coming from France and Italy (on my father's side), I think it's all Catholic of some sort. Although I've not a clue what's on my mom's side. You know where I can link up to these "Mormon Libraries"?
