"Question: It is dark and you are walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children after going to the movies. Suddenly, a swarthy, unshaven, 6ft 5in 275lb thug dressed in black with a huge knife comes around the corner and runs at you screaming obscenities. You draw your trusty HK USP .45 loaded with eight 230 grain hydroshocks and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family.
What do you do?
Liberal/California Answer:
Well, that's not enough information to answer the question! Does the man look poor or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that is inspiring him to attack? Could we run away? What does my wife think? What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Is it possible he'd be happy with killing just me? Does he definitely want to kill me or would he just be content to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me? This is all so confusing! I need to discuss this with some friends for a few days to try to come to a conclusion.
Conservative Answer: BANG!

Oooh now I can have fun with this one....
Questions to legality:
1. Do you have a route of escape? If yes run, if no stay put.
2. Have you declared yourself as armed? If yes move on to 3. If no then do so.
3. Have you warned said party to stop his advance? If yes move on to 4. If no then do so.
4. If all above have been met and said party continues, lethal force is warranted, and you may fire in a safe fashion.
5. Lay your firearm at your feet and await law enforcement officials.
6. Obey every command given and be truthful in all statements.
7. Catch the movie tomorrow cause you got reem of paperwork to fill out and more questions than the SAT's to answer.
By the way, if this was your house skip to step 4.

Hrm... Eight rounds?
One for each shoulder
One for each knee
One for each.... well, use your imagination. ;-)
One for the lower-abdominal region.
One right between the eyes. (If I'm in a good mood. If not, make sure the one in the gut went all the way through.)

Yes, Then you have to contend with Civil Court, me I'd rather deal with Criminal Court, if a charge was even filed :). Your Civil liabilty in a shooting can be a greater risk then the criminal charges. And here in the US, the your legal protections are less vigorous in civil cases then in criminal one.
1 thing though, whenever a shooting occurs, a crime has been comminted. Either the shooting is legal as a defense against a crime or attempted crime, or else the shooting is not justifible, in which case the shooting itself a crime.

In Ky lethal force it is ok to use lethal force if you BELIEVE you are in peril of imminent physical harm or death. So just a big guy running towards me with a knife?? Double tap the chest (cause even an expert can't hit a running target in the legs when the dance is on) and hold aim till the cops arrive.
I am also an instructor for Ky Criminal Justice Dept, Concealed Deadly Weapons

Ace,
You have no idea... :)
Coby,
You'd be surprised how long I can ice you with no body, no weapon, and no motive. :)
Resq,
I've seen expert shots who can't hit center mass in a crisis. And I teach that and a couple of others. We should compare notes, together we can teach the world to make every shoot clean.

Just a figure of speech, you may very well have an idea about civil and/or criminal proceedings, Mr. Deal (if that is in fact your real name :) )
I've seen cases I can't build for lack of cause, dead leads, etc, that turn into multi million dollar settlements and awards the following month.
