Well, its been a hard fought 3 day battle with losses on both sides, but in the end, i arose victorious.

Day 1:

I awake to the sound of my girlfriend saying "Theres a Leak in the basement!!!"
I proceed to "dam-up" the surrounding area with any available towels, as its a slow leak, not too bad.
I return from work to find that the water has broken through the dams, and is making its way to my headquarters (carpeted area with computers), and flanking from the north and south. That engagement lasted many hours, but i came out of it clean. A little sore and tired, but otherwise unscathed.

Day 2:

I awake at 0400 in the morning without the aid of my alarm, as i feel that an attack is imminent. I was right.
I arrive at the battle to see to direct attacks, one flank from the north, but the primary assault is from the west. Again, a hard fought battle that lasts a few hours, and is barely put at bay, but i assumed the enemies reserves were limited at this point, and decided to give my troops (me) a chance to sleep.

I am again awoken by my girlfriend at about 0700 saying the enemy has advanced considerably, and we are in iminent danger of losing our frontline. That battle was long and arduous, and the enemies frontline has advanced from its original position considerably. By this time, a professional has arrived, but says he can do nothing until the weather improves.
I am told that the enemy has sacrificed much to gain this extra ground, and it should be safe to leave the frontline with minimal guard. I do so against my gut, but decide work and sleep are of the essence. I proceed to work at 1430 hours and return to the battle again to find the enemy slowly advancing. That is quickly put to rest, and eases my fears about reinforcements. I perform a changing of the guard (towels) and proceed to attempt sleep, with the condition that i check on the troops at 0400 hours again.
0400 arrives, alarm goes off, and i proceed to find the enemy making a pitiful attempt at advancing, and again, put it to rest quickly.
0500 hours i attempt sleep, but for some reason, am uneasy and restless, and get little.

Day 3: Dooms Day

0700 hours arrive with great alarm as my girlfriend informs me the frontline has been breached! It seems the enemy hid a transport in a weather pattern and brought in many MANY reinforcements.
At this point, i lose my cool, and declare defeat.
But, i get an insurgence of energy, and a new recruit (shopvac) shortly thereafter, and begin to push the enemy back past the frontline (with minimal losses) and continue hold the enemy back for approximately 6 hours until a green beret arrives, cuts the enemy off at the knees with one fell swoop, and the battle is won!

A massive cleanup operation is scheduled for later today and tomorrow, and some minor repairs to the structure are scheduled for next week.

Father-Time.

I would have to admit I know what you are talking about having had a similar experience myself before and having to deal with. I have to say not being disrespectful in any way. You have writtened about it in a way that has had me in tears laughing of the descriptions and as the drama goes on. It sounds like one of those Chevy Chase movies from the past.. I can't remember tha name of the movie off hand. Well good luck with the Basement and man I will have to keep an eye out for other stories by you.

Respectfully

Congratulations on a well fought battle showing the true courage and dedication to win the battle. Maybe there is an award for that.

You might want to consider calling in the UDT's (sump pumps) and keep them on standby for emergency purposes. After multiple nights of fathom deep basement water I too can comprehend your plight.

No go slip out of those wet things and into a dry martini...

That was one of the most creative and relevant ways I've seen to tell that kind of story, Good Job Maury. Not knowing the access point of the incursion I couldn't help but think why didn't you just carpet bomb the area (wrap it in a crap load of duct tape for a broken pipe) or napalm their trenches (caulk the crack in the floor/wall).

Both valid options, although the carpet bomb was unnecessary as the terrain was too rough, adn jagged, and impossible to get a clear path to the target.

Napalming the trenches was definately an option, but we were at a loss to find them, and were limited on resources.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention good thinking about the shopvac. I love those things. Water is indeed a formidable opponent, Good Job Soldier!
