I'm shopping for a new monitor. Right now I have a KDS 17" Flat Screen CRT. It's ok, but the focus leaves something to be desired. I am considering about $400. Any suggestions?

BTW, I am running at 1280 x 1024, so I'm getting a bit spoiled as far as screen res is concerned.

These three are pretty good picks. it's tough to go wrong with a Sony monitor.

My current monitor is a ViewSonic A75f (17" - 16" viewable - Flat CRT), running 1280x1024x32. It's been pretty good to me over the past three years, so I'd go check out what ViewSonic has. You say $400? Take a look at anything that starts with A9 and ends with an f (Those would be 19" Flat CRTs), they look to be pretty good with prices $250 - $300. If you're gonna get a 21-inch though, you're looking a bit out of your price range from what I've seen. (Note: This was a very brief search, so there may be better prices out there.)

Well, if you're just after a CRT monitor then I recommend the Hitachi CM721FET 19" Flat CRT Monitor. Nice high resolutions and refresh rates. It doesn't cost THAT much either!

There are problems with the focus. No matter how much I try to adjust it, there are patches that are slightly blurry. It's great for gaming, but the text isn't too hot.

I would recommend checking out ebay. I bought virtually all of my current rig from here and saved around £2000 on it. My monitor is a Sun 21" (Sony True Flatscreen) with vga and sun outputs. I had to buy a shielded cable for it but that was peanuts. The monitor was six months old when I got it for £180. Priced new from a dealer it was £750. CHeck out ebay first - its always worth it.

I recently purchased a refurbished HP 17" flat panel monitor for $400 from www.overstock.com

Be advised, a flat panel screen monitor is much more costly initially than a CRT but the difference is worth it. And the energy savings are sizable.

Brand new, I've seen 17" flat panels for $525 and higher with 19" models well into $600's and above.

I bought a refurbished printer from Overstock two years ago and got basically a brand new machine for about 30% off.

This monitor would normally run $525 or higher.

Refurbished does NOT equal used. It means there may have been an order which was delivered and simply returned to sender. Or maybe it was used...but these are not cars. We're talking monitors. Not likely to get a whole lot of wear and tear.

So...in the name of saving a few bucks...over 100 in this case..check into refurbished flat panel screens.

I used to work for SCI doing rework (fixing immediate problems off of the assembly line). I also did refurbish work. This entailed retesting and burning the equipment in again. I know from this that refurbished does not mean it's crap, just broken in, lol.
