Here is a full interview with the developer - its long but its a good read:

Features: Interviews: Alexei Sytyanov chats about S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Oblivion Lost - Part 1

Hello, How are you? tell us about your self and what is your role in the making of S.T.A.L.K.E.R?

Hi, I'm Alexei Sytyanov, the Game Designer/Scriptwriter of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Oblivion Lost.

What engine is S.T.A.L.K.E.R using, why did you choose/develope this engine and tell us a bit about its features.

The game is powered by our in-house engine X-Ray, which is a brand new high-tech engine supporting an array of cutting-edge technologies. X-Ray allows combining both indoor and immense outdoor areas with high geometry detailing (about 100.000 polygons per frame). Owing to hardware T&L optimizing, continuous progressive detailing technology for entire geometry, powerful system of visibility defining, which uses not only sector-portal ideology, but also antiportals for occlusion culling - 60 fps are easily attained even on average computer configuration. The system of skeleton animation allows using motion-capture hardware to create smooth and realistic character movements. Along with use of detailed textures, geometry detailing objects are utilized too for level surfaces (grass, rocks, etc). The engine uses as direct model of lighting, so as "radiosity", along with colored dynamic lighting and dynamic "soft" shadows.

What does S.T.A.L.K.E.R stand for and when did development begin on this title?

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is an abbreviation we'd prefer not to disclose right now. We started working on the engine about 2 years ago, while the very game has been in development for a year now.

In a few pictures I saw a helicopter, is the helicopter player controlled or computer controlled and what is its use?

The thing is, we changed the game plot several times before we came to the current game concept. Initially the game had a strong sci-fi component and was about conquering new worlds, portals to unknown territories etc. The helicopter you saw on screenshots belongs to those old days. What we have now is a totally different concept of grim reality and Chernobyl setting, and you will see the difference if you compare those pics with the latest game screenshots. Still, a different concept could not force us leave out a cool idea of controllable vehicles, and there will be such in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Oblivion Lost.

What are some special features about the game and how will they be used?

First off, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. will have a very special atmosphere. To give you an idea of it, imagine Ghost Busters in Chenrnobyl, add "Stalker" movie by Andrey Tarkovsky, "The Roadside Picnic" book by Strugatsky brothers, intelligent mutant creatures, anomalies, stalkers. As you may probably know, we went to the very Chernobyl a while ago, and we are up to bringing its murky atmosphere of post-Soviet reality into the game. The main game features are as follows:
-20 square kilometers of the Zone, outdoor areas;
-original creatures and their abilities: group intellect, telepathy, telekinesis;
-unique types of weapons;
-strong non-linear plot with several endings;
-realistic communication with any sapient character;
-exploring anomalous zones by means of special equipment;
-many types of weapons;
-trade;
-two-hand fire;
-strong character intellect;
-changing world of the Zone;
-control of vehicles and robots.

What is the story line for single player and what will some of the mission objectives be?

The game is set in year 2030 and player performs the role of a stalker, artifact hunter, who travels the radioactive and anomalous Zone around Chernobyl atomic power plant. The Zone was created after the second explosion at the atomic facility in 2006, as a result of shocking governmental conspiracy, where secret underground laboratories, new generation weapons of psychotropic nature and other terrible things are involved. Stalkers illicitly penetrate the Zone, cordoned off by army, to look for artifacts (objects with unusual, anomalous attributes, generated by periodic outbursts off the Zone center) they can subsequently sell to various traders, scientific laboratories, governmental organizations etc and get money or special equipment in reward. Player appears in the Zone as one of about 100 other stalkers roaming the area, and it's definitely not the safest place to walk in. Strange, invisible anomalies (like gravitational pits, poisonous fogs etc) bear mortal danger to the entrapped beings, making an adequate equipment a must for staying alive. Player starts with a simple detector, but as he progresses through the game, he gets access to more sophisticated equipment, allowing him to reach previously inaccessible zones. Searching artifacts, performing various game-generated quests (for example, saving a lost scientist in the zone) appear to be the secondary player's objectives, while the ultimate goal is to uncover the mystery of the Zone.

How many missions will there be and what would the game completion time be for a skilled player?

There will be about 15 game levels joined into one big world of 20 square kilometers, where players are not limited to direction of their movement and may explore the area according to their liking. The high game replay ability is secured by the life simulation system we implement, the Zone constantly changes, and its inhabitants, monsters, NPCs live their own life (for example, monsters don't stand still, they constantly move and react to the environment), so you never have the same enemies at the same place, and the very gameplay, where some of the game areas reveal to a better-equipped player, while previously unseen or inaccessible, so that player keeps exploring the area, returns to locations he visited previously and so on.
For a quick play-through a skilled player will need to spend 30-50 hours, but under an exploratory approach, it may take much longer to play.

Is there multiplayer and are the missions in singleplayer used in multiplayer or does multiplayer have different objectives?

Yes, there will be multiplayer in the game. We'll provide all the popular modes, including CTF, Deathmatch, Team Match and Cooperative play. There also will be several new modes, like Hunt, where players select a map, purchase weapons and start playing. At the game start and for each enemy kill players receive money. When killed, players buy weapons again (for the money gained in combats) and begin fighting again

How many guns are there currently and are you planning to add any more?

We plan 30 weapon types for the game - everything starting from a knife up to toting gun. As the game is set in the near future, we have selected the weapons accordingly. Some of them are conventional weapons nowadays, while some of them are currently in development, like Belgium's F2000, for instance. Weapons are going to have realistic physics. Nearly all the weapons are going to be modifiable, which means you can purchase and install various parts like mufflers or sniper optics etc. There also will be artifact weapons enabling you with extraordinary possibilities.

Is there going to be modification tools released so fans can add on to a game that they love?

Yes, we'll probably provide community with the tools, but unlikely with game release.
