Ok here we go ....

The fan on my Gforce 4 Ti4600 went out and I replaced it today. However when I try to do anything requiring directX video locks up and have to reboot system.

Card fried or directX/driver issues?

Card fried. Replace. Sorry, I know it's not the answer you were looking for.

When you put the fan on, did you make sure it was properly seated?
It might be worth just reseating it with some more thermal compound (Only a little though) then try it again.

If card was fried i reckon you would get no boot what so ever but you may have done some damage :(

Once card has been reseated reinstall directx and try again :)

GeForce 4 Ti4600!!? I would replace it. I did. Got Fx 5900XT. It was very cheep. With the GeForce I had problems walking through smoke. FX = None.
Sry, this is not an answer to ur question, but only a remark

Hean if I had the money the Ti4600 would have all ready been sent to be a video card in 1 of my linux boxes.

FT I am gonna try that but instead of reinstalling DirectX I am just going to reinstall XP as I have been screwing around with DirectX so much I am not sure if it would uninstall or just be even more frustrating at this point.

Well card is officially dead.

Even with the new fan and a clean install it wouldn't run direct X ... video just locked up all together.

I can sympathise with you Rogue. I'm pretty sure that's what happened to my 9600 SE a while back. Bright boys at ATI used a heatsink instead of a fan.

If you want to get even better at aao New video card is in order... I personally found that no matter how good you where you couldnt get much better with all that lag, so I got a video card and my 1st server I got a frag rate of 16 before I started to calm down... serious  It is now alot more fun, Like father time said check the fan I had my fan smooshed againt my 56k modem that i wasnt using and it didnt work to well then my cousin (computer expert) opens the box and almost gets mad and brakes of the modem   Hope you get it fixed man :banger:

My computer locks up too, starting to think it's a feature and not a defect. :( I've even tried a different video card. Hope you have better luck than me

if it is locking up mark that would be direct X

which version of Direct X are you running?

If I install directX 9c even the new card locks up but if I leave it at 9b everything is fine.
