View Full Version : Problem

I was wondering if anyone had a solution or maybe pointers on how to find answers to my problem.
The problem is:
about 95% of the time if I reset the machine via the reset button, the mobo is unable to find the harddrive. This never happens with the 10gb hdd but happens almost always with the 80gb IBM Deskstar.
I have performed a HDD health test with an IBM util and it comes up fine..
I have flashed the bios recently and it seemed to happen after I flashed...
So the only 3 posiibles are:
Bad HDD to mobo interface,
Bios and IBM HDD problem,
Faulty Mobo.
Anything I can do to correct this?

Ummm.... since it happened after you flashed, don't you think it's more likely a bad flash, or a bug in the new BIOS? Could you possibly try getting an older version to re-flash the BIOS with?

Another possibility: The last two motherboards I have purchased actually require you to put the drives on the cable in the right order. Check your jumpers and that they are on the right connector on the cable.

Also check the auto detect settings and all that. Last time I flashed a bios it reset all that to default. If you have it set to auto detect I think you have to have the drives in the right spot and the jumpers set to cable select. If it is not detecting it try just setting it to know the drive instead of detecting. I’ve had that problem a time or two I set it up every different way until it worked.

I never use calbe select. Dunno exactly why, I just don't. Always have the one on the end connector jumpered MASTER, and the middle one SLAVE.

I'm running a total of 6 drives and on the primeary IDE I have a maxtor and a western digital for some reason they don't get a long unless they are cable select. all the rest are fine but they're running off the raid.

6?
Raid?
Never played with it.
Never had that much money for that many drives.

Try pouring 1 cup of warm water into the floppy drive, place in a pre-heated oven at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. See if that helps......I'm kidding!!! I can see all of the emails now, "you ruined my computer!"

Actually, a rubber mallet has been known to solve some hard drive problems... at least temporarily. Skip the water and that floppy drive idea might work! j/k about the floppy part.
